New Chief Executive appointed

The Urology Foundation (TUF) has appointed Rebecca Porta as Chief Executive. An established and experienced charity Chief Executive, Rebecca brings a wealth of experience having held senior roles within some of the UK’s leading health and medical research charities, including The Multiple Sclerosis Society, CancerBACUP (now Macmillan Cancer Support) and the British Lung Foundation. Having led male cancer charity, The Orchid Appeal, for over 11 years, Rebecca has extensive experience and understanding of the urology community. She joins the Foundation from Bowel Research UK where she oversaw the merger of two medical research charities and the launch of the new charity. Rebecca is also a Trustee of Cancer52, an alliance of 100 organisations working to address the issue of inequality for rare and less common cancers.

Commenting on her appointment, Rebecca says, “It is a great privilege to be joining The Urology Foundation at a time when investment in research and support for our colleagues in the urology community has never been more needed. I am looking forward to leading the charity towards an ambitious future.”

Director of Research & Operations appointed

The opening of a CEO role was prompted by former Chief Executive, Louise de Winter, deciding to step down. After 10 years of successfully leading The Urology Foundation and expanding the charity’s research programme to include Innovation and Research Awards, robotic surgery training, trainee fellowships and educational prizes, Louise de Winter decided to move to a part-time role. She becomes Director of Research & Operations, overseeing the charity’s grant and education programme.

Chairman’s comment

Paul Fletcher, Chairman of The Urology Foundation, comments, “After 10 years of leading The Urology Foundation, Louise de Winter has decided to move into a part time role. We are hugely indebted to Louise for her leadership and commitment over the past decade. However, we are thoroughly delighted that Louise has expressed her wish to continue to contribute to the Foundation in a renewed capacity as Director of Research & Operations, as she remains deeply committed to the charity and looks forward to being a part of its ongoing future success.

As a consequence of this decision, and following a competitive recruitment process, I am pleased to announce TUF’s new Chief Executive, Rebecca Porta. Rebecca is an established charity CEO and knows the urology community well through her previous role as CEO of Orchid, the male cancer charity.”
