Action Bladder Cancer UK (ABC UK) is delighted to announce that the winner of the 2025 ABC UK Nurse of the Year award is Kathryn Chatterton, Bladder Cancer Advanced Nurse Practitioner / Cancer Nurse Specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust.
Kathryn is recognised as a fantastic, skilled, innovative and compassionate bladder cancer nurse, whose influence extends nationally and internationally. She has been a cystoscopist for over 16 years and set up the first nurse-led flexible cystoscopy service in Australia in 2009. In the UK, she now leads the only nurse-led blue light outpatient flexible cystoscopy service, alongside nurse-led NMIBC flexible cystoscopy and intravesical treatment services.
Kathryn is also co-chair of the European Association of Urology Nurses (EAUN) bladder cancer special interest group, delivering education and training across Europe, including the EAUN annual flexible cystoscopy course. She has developed online NMIBC training modules and has contributed to national policy and guidance (e.g. GIRFT).
Her colleagues describe Kathryn as “an innovator and engine” who brings calm, humour and expertise to the service … valued by patients and staff alike, setting a standard of care that is second to none.
This award celebrates Kathryn’s outstanding dedication to patients, her leadership in service innovation, and her passion for supporting and educating bladder cancer nurses across the UK and Europe.
Jeannie Rigby, CEO of ABC UK, said:
"It’s a very well-deserved prize – Kathryn really does go above and beyond her role, and is involved in so many things to the benefit of bladder cancer patients. Specialist nurses are so very important to those with bladder cancer and we are delighted to celebrate this achievement. We look forward to recognising many more wonderful nurses in coming years."
The ABC UK Nurse of the Year was newly launched in 2025 to recognise specialist urology and cancer nurses who go the extra mile in supporting bladder cancer patients. Nurses are nominated by their colleagues, who know them and their work best.
