The charity Bladder & Bowel UK has this week released the findings of a powerful new report. Supported by Attends, this research reveals the often-overlooked emotional, financial, and practical challenges faced by families and carers supporting someone with incontinence. From increased mental health pressures to social isolation and financial strain, the report highlights the urgent need for better services and greater awareness.

The research, part of a wider project delivered by Bladder & Bowel UK and supported by Attends, underscores how incontinence affects wellbeing, mental health, and social participation for both those living with the condition and the people who care for them.

Key findings include:

Mental health and wellbeing under strain: Over half of carers reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression as a direct result of their caring responsibilities.
Isolation and restricted freedom: Many carers feel trapped and unable to leave the house for more than short periods, increasing feelings of loneliness and social isolation.
Access to services: Delays in accessing bladder and bowel services and shortages of essential supplies are adding further pressure to carers and families.
Financial pressures: Costs ranging from hygiene products to rising utility bills are placing strain on already-stretched households.

On the back of these findings, Bladder & Bowel UK is calling for urgent action to improve support and reduce stigma. The report emphasises the importance of:

Enhanced training: Equipping carers and healthcare professionals with the knowledge and resources to provide effective, compassionate care.
Public awareness: Raising understanding and normalising conversations about incontinence to protect wellbeing and encourage timely support.
Expanded support services: Improving access to mental health support and networks to safeguard the wellbeing of both individuals with incontinence and their carers.
