This study is from Ghent, Belgium. Nocturia is one of the most bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms affecting both men and women. Key factors to consider in evaluating are nocturnal polyuria (NP) and reduced bladder capacity. NP with low osmolality is related to impaired circadian rhythm of vasopressin. Eighty-eight patients were included: the mean age was 47 years and there was a nearly equal ratio of male to female. Results showed that nocturia is indeed due to a mismatch between nocturnal voided volume (NVV) and bladder capacity. The main factor in women was shown to be bladder capacity while in men it was higher NVV. The role of desmopressin and desmopressin-resistance was also discussed.
